Mold Resistant Drywall

There aren’t many things that can taint the interior of a home more rapidly than mold especially in homes that don’t use mold resistant drywall, and to make matters even worse, it can also be very bad news for the health of those living in that space. Mold has a way of quickly spreading, but the problem is that the starting points tend to be in areas that are not visible to the naked eye. It will kick in behind the fridge, or up in the bathroom, nestled behind the toilet, or underneath shower stall tiles. It’s not uncommon for people in the house to become ill for no apparent reason, before discovering some nasty mold spots on their drywall.

Mold Resistant DrywallMold on drywall is particularly hard to remove, especially when it comes to black mold removal, and more often than not folks will simply just remove the tainted sheets and move on. The problem there is that the supporting beams in the wall may still be harboring some of the dampness, waiting to spread the sloppy love to the next piece of drywall that goes up. Many people believe that replacing those damaged boards with green board will help alleviate the problem, but those rely on a chemical coating to stop the spread, yet still contain plenty of paper to make them a tasty treat for fungus.

That may lead you to believe that there are no other options, except of course praying that you won’t have to be forced into cleaning mold from drywall. Rather than relying on divine intervention, you could spend a little extra money and go with paperless drywall for all your home construction and renovation projects. It’s usually the extra cost that is enough to put people off, but when you measure that against the potential financial outlay should mold decide to dine on your delicious paper drywall, then you might actually end up ahead of the game.

Mold Resistant Drywall Prices

The paperless brand is the closest thing to a completely mold resistant drywall, but there is still a small chance of mold taking hold on that as opposed to even the supposedly mold resistant green boards. Those who argue against the use of paperless drywall will start with cost, which is usually about $1 per sheet more than normal drywall prices, but the cost to call in a mold removal company will easily be thousands of dollars.

1 Sheet of 1/2″ x 8′ x 4′ = $10.61
1 Sheet of 1/2″ x 12′ x 4′ = $14.43
1 Sheet of 1/4″ x 8′ x 4′ = $9.23

Any professional drywall contractor will be well aware of those problems, so if you need an expert opinion from someone with history with paperless drywall. But, if you’re an ambitious homeowner, you shouldn’t have much trouble switching out some to apply a small mold treatment. The reasons to go that route, other than the mold protection is that paperless (mold resistant drywall) tends to be much stronger, meaning that it is less like to warp and bend over time, which lowers the likelihood of potential damage or costly repairs.
